Hamburg Harbor as seen from Hauptkirche St. Michaelis

This image is shot from the top of the Hauptkirche St. Michaelis in Hamburg Germany. Basic processing and tweaking in Lightroom, HDR in Photomatix Pro, then a slight texturing through the middle of the image, using Photoshop, to give a more dirty industrial look.

This shot was taken near the end of an epic day of walking through Hamburg. This was probably the last day that my mother spent the whole day walking. Being back in Hamburg seemed to give her a little more energy, life and optimism that she did not have before we arrived.

The Hauptkirche St. Michaelis in particular was a sight she wanted to see one last time. She recounted a story from when she was around 16 years old. Just before she left to live in Canada she and several of her school friends snuck out and spent the day walking around. One of the places she went was to the very spot that I took this photo. Back in the 50’s when she visited last she and her friends had to walk to the top of the tower. Thankfully, they have since installed an elevator or there is no way she would have been able to make the climb.

I am really glad that I got to spend these last few days that she had walking around a place that she knew so well when she was young. It’s something that growing up I never expected would have taken place. It’s funny how things become much more important when you realize that there is limited time available.

I am so glad i had the chance to spend these days walking around. To be able to take photos was great, but not nearly as memorable as the experience.

Growing up one of my biggest dreams was to explore the world. Honestly I never thought this would become reality. But at the end of 2014 I quit my job as a project manager to do just that. I sold most everything I own, packed up the remaining boxes in storage, and set out to see the world. My goals while traveling are to meet people everywhere I go, work on becoming a better photographer, and attempt to stay where the weather is not freezing. Along the way I am posting photos at and writing about my experiences at
